Kidney Stones Symptoms

Being aware of the various kidney stone symptoms is important, as it will help you to determine when you should seek medical advice.   Prompt treatment is necessary to relieve the pain quickly and prevent the stone from causing any further damage.

If the kidney stone is particularly small, it may only cause very slight symptoms and discomfort. It may even go undetected and simply be passed painlessly during urination.

Symptoms usually become very noticeable when the stone causes a blockage or enters the narrow tube between the kidney and the bladder called the ureter.

What are the symptoms of kidney stones?

Kidney stone attacks can be extremely painful.  This can be very distressful for the sufferer and is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting.   The pain is usually felt in the back, but can also move to the abdomen and on to the groin.

Blood in the urine can be a result of a stone scraping the lining of the renal cavity or the ureter.  The urine may appear cloudy and give off a noticeably pungent aroma.

Frequently feeling the need to urinate, or experiencing a burning sensation whilst urinating is often a sign of kidney stones.  This is more likely the closer the stone is to the bladder.  Conversely, an inability to urinate is also experienced by some.

Developing a fever or chills is another sign of infection and can result in quite a high temperature.

Seek medical advice

Many of these symptoms could also be the result of another conditions, such as Urinary Tract Infections (UTI’s), but in many cases it turns out to be a kidney stone problem.   The only way to be certain is to visit to your doctor, who can arrange for an examination and various tests to be carried out if necessary.

Recognising kidney stones symptoms is only going to benefit you if you act on this knowledge by seeking the appropriate medical assistance required to treat this unpleasant condition.
