Diet And Kidney Stones

One of the most effective ways to fight and prevent kidney stones, and also reduce their chances of reappearing, is by sticking to a healthier and balanced diet. 

Alongside an early diagnosis, maintaining a sensible diet is crucial in keeping kidney stones at bay. This is especially so for those already suffering from this painful ailment, as this can have a direct relationship to the severity of condition.

It is an unfortunate fact that many people who have already had kidney stones will more than likely have them again in the future.  This is very often simply due to the fact that many fail to maintain a proper diet and exercise routine.

One important step to take is to increase your fluid intake.  Drinking more liquid, particularly water, will help to flush out toxins from your system.  Drinking at least a two litres of water a day will help rid your body of the excess salts and minerals that can form stones.

Reducing your sodium intake is also vital.  Too much sodium or salt is a prime cause of kidney stones as it can result in an increased level of calcium in your urine.  There is already enough salt present in a lot of foods, so there is no need to add more salt to your meals and cooking.

Eating more foods that are rich in fibre, such as wheat, rye, bran flakes, fruit and vegetables are also recommended.  Fibre is an important dietary requirement as it helps cleanse the body.  There are two types of fibre – soluble and insoluble.  Whilst both types are highly beneficial, insoluble fibre is believed to be particularly effective in reducing the build up of calcium in the urine, as it contains the compound phytate which appears to hinder the formation of calcium salt crystals.
