Calcium Kidney Stones

Calcium kidney stones are one of the most common types of stone to affect sufferers of this painful condition. Kidney stones develop due to certain chemicals failing to be properly absorbed, which lead to these chemicals becoming too concentrated.  Not surprisingly, calcium kidney stones are caused by an excessive calcium build-up.

Calcium plays an important role in keeping bones and teeth strong and healthy, however too much of this useful substance can lead to problems.  The calcium binds with oxalate, phosphate or carbonate to form a stone.

In many cases, this build-up of calcium is found in the urine.  This causes crystals of calcium oxalate or phosphate to form in the urinary tract, which can make it very difficult and painful to pass urine.

Poor diet can also be responsible for too much calcium in the urine.  Eating a diet high in salt will push up your body’s sodium levels, which in turn, will increase calcium levels. Too much vitamin D is also a culprit.

People that consume quite a lot of dairy produce are more likely to go to develop calcium kidney stones, so reducing dairy intake is important.

Another cause of excess calcium in the body is an overactive parathyroid gland.  This gland is responsible for regulating the body’s calcium levels.

Calcium kidney stones can affect anybody and are often hereditary.  Once you have had these stones, there is a strong possibility that you will get them again.  Therefore to prevent calcium kidney stones taking hold in the future, it is advisable to take preventative steps now.
